Q&A: Question for interior designers, my house needs decorating!?

Question for interior designers, my house needs decorating!?
Hi there,
I’m trying to design my new house and hoping someone can give some creative advice. The house is a patio type home, very floridian with the tile roof and all. We had the opportunity to customize the home and choose to do a tile floor throughout the house (we have two dogs and it is so much easier to keep clean). The tile is a golden brown color. It is very open concept and the living room and dining room and in the same space as one huge rectangular room. The kitchen sits right outside that rectangle but is open to the space (you can walk from dining room straight into kitchen with no walls.) The ceiling is huge and vaulted to one side. It angles up.
So my design style is very modern, almost industrial with some beachy chic elements too. I would really like to do a semi circle couch and a glass dining room table. My only concern is that tile floor. Would a modern/industrial style be okay? I also have a problem with wall color. The room is just so huge and I don’t want it to be some boring beige. I love jewel tones as accents and adore teal and aqua marines. I want the furniture to look like it belongs in the home but at the same time, I don’t want it to be traditional. The neighborhood is so cookie cutter that I feel like guests should be shocked (in a good way) when they come inside. Also, for the bedrooms. Again, the tile floor is in there and I’m wanting to put in some modern furniture but ideas would be great. Also material ideas. I love glass, steel, any metals, dark woods and very light woods. Any ideas are welcome!
Thanks!

Why don’t you design some of the rooms using mydeco.com’s 3D room planner. You can experiment with different colours, add wallpaper and art to the walls, add furniture to the room, and view the room from different angles.
I used it and it really helped me to save a lot of time and money and is really easy to use and very helpful. I suggest trying this tool so that you don’t make any huge mistakes that may cost you a lot to rectify later, the tool is free to use too.
Hope this helps.

Have you ever heard of the magazine called ‘Dwell’, that would be a very good inspirational souce for you to look into.
Let’s start with the tile floor: You can break up areas with the use of area rugs. You will be shocked to know that there are some pretty modern edgy carpets out there. Have one for the living area and another for the dining area.
Open floor plans are very tricky when you love a lot of color, you almost always have to choose a color and slab it all over the walls. Most people do one of two things, they either commit to a neutral (now remember, neutrals aren’t always beige, they are just toned down versions of saturated colors that are the same tone as beige) and then use the colors they love to punch up the intensity in their accent decor and art work. The other thing people do is be brave and paint that area that jewel tone color they love so much and they tone it down with lighter colors in their decor.
Now what do you do with all of that, say for instance your favorite color is turquoise, you paint the area that color. For the living area you tone it down with washy aquas, and pale lime green. Your base color is white. Your dining room will be the same colors but instead of the lime green, a citron yellow or blood orange. Examples:

If this is too bright for you forget the colors, go with blacks and/or silver accents like these:

And those are your options for the first floor.
In terms of wood, it all depends if you want to be heavy or light. You could go inbetween and look for furniture pieces made out of zebra wood http://www.artdecoltd.com/images/zebra_table1.jpg
Beautiful stuff. Again, go find that Dwell Magazine and look through it. The options are endless for your house.
Good Luck!
If its a large room a deep aqua on the walls would be fun. As for the tile floors, i would put a throw rug under or in front of the sofa that way the floors won’t take away from the modern sofa. At least a throw rug you can have cleaned and its not too expensive to throw away if the dogs destroy it eventually.
